Yarra Valley - While the Yarra Valley is considered one of the less prominent wine-making areas, it has the advantage of being close to Melbourne. From early starts in 1838 - when William Ryrie established the first commercial vineyard (he produced the first wine in 1845) - the area has grown into a food and wine paradise with small wine yards just waiting to be discovered. Tours can comprise either large well-known wineries or small family-operated vineyards or a selection of your own. You may want to enjoy lunch or dinner from the top of Mt Rael boasting unparalleled panoramic views of the Yarra Valley or other restaurants in the valley. Rutherglen - Fancy a trip North? Why not go to Rutherglen for a weekend and visit a range of wineries in the comfort of a limousine? The area is not only known for fruity white wines that are rich in flavour, the reds are also worth their weight in gold. In addition, get to know some of the fortified wines such as Muskats, Ports and Tokays. Based on vintage red wines, the fortified have become famous over the last 30 years. Avoca - Less known than the Yarra Valley, the area around Avoca is as historic and comprises a number of surprises for the wine connosseur. Continue the journey to Great Western, where 1.5 million bottles of champagne mature every year in extensive underground vaults dug by gold miners in the last century. Coonawarra - Just over the western border of Victoria, you'll find Australia's other red centre. Coonawarra, built on the famous red soil - "terra rossa" - has developed into Australia's most celebrated fine wine region. The wines are recognised all over the world. While the "Grand Hermitage" may not be for everybody, the other red wines (not to forget the white ones) are equally famous as the area is not known for quantity, but for quality.
